IRISH COMIC NEWS: Anthony O’Neill’s Kato

http://anthonylukeoneill.blogspot.com/

SEE ALL OF ANTHONY’S NOODLE IMAGES

ANTHONY SAYS:

“I’ve always been a crazy Bruce fan so of course I would have loved to have seen him as Kato and possibly even get his own series outside of the Green Hornet. I think we can all agree that that would’ve been awesome, but alas, he was taken far too suddenly and way too young. He had so much more to give.

I drew Bruce with pencil and then threw some photoshop over him just to make him pop that bit more. Upon starting this pic I wanted to add in the famous mask and hat, but I just got way too distracted by Bruce’s face and spent most my time on that. But hey, it still looks good and I like to think you still get a Kato feel from him.

What’a you guys think?”

EVENT:Creator Owned Day 1st March

Taken from Stephen Downeys website, this challenge is described as the following:
The challenge:
Create a sketch of an original character or concept and and post it on your blog Thurday 1st March. It should be a concept completely owned by the artist (or co-owned with the writer/collaborators permission to post).
Why? A number of reasons:

1. A lot of reader and creator focus is on characters owned by larger corporations. Let’s bring a little spotlight on creating brand new, creator owned concepts.
2. Bringing a little awareness to the business side of co-creating original content. Take a look at Jeff Parker’s article and follow up comments on the subject. Co-creators can take this opportunity as a little trial run, just make sure to have a mutual agreement in advance.
3. Fun! A few creators discussed the idea on Twitter and thought it was a great opportunity to create something entirely new, while bringing attention to these sketches.
The details:

1. Create an sketch of a new character/character you own. We’re doing this primarily to get our imaginations running, so a concept specifically created for Creator Owned Day is probably ideal. It should NOT be a character owned by either a company eg. Marvel’s Wolverine, OR owned by other creators e.g. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. It also shouldn’t take distinct features from characters owned by others e.g. Wolverspawn You must own the character.
2. Post it on your blog, or Facebook, Twitter etc.
3. Share your post using the Twitter hashtag #CreatorOwnedDay.
3. Help us spread the word by retweeting your favourite new characters.
I’ts a fantastic idea that’s being tweeted about a lot with a lot of buzz around it, so do continue to spread the word! :)

However I think Raziel Moon above looks more like an animation storyboard than a Panelplay. Still its fun, I guess

NEWS: Alan Nolan Speaks To ICN On What 2012 Will Bring

2011 was a monster year for Alan Nolan with several huge books released from O’Brien Press and topped off with an ICNA for his troubles last Autumn. With 2012 nicely poised following the successes of Death By Chocolate, The Big Break Detectives and Six Million Ways To Die, Alan spoke with ICN this afternoon to fill us in on what will be a busy year ahead.

The next book up from O’Brien Press is Destination: Homicide which is due for release in March. The story is of two inept detective buddies from the Hood City PD who are given a case where the city’s superheroes are turning up dead. Alan described how his time on this book was more focused, “I’ve been taking a lot more time with the artwork this time around – given that I’m just doing one book at a time now as opposed to three at once, I have a bit more time to play around with.”

Having had three books released by O’Brien Press last year I asked Alan whether or not he was more comfortable this time working on more books in the ‘Murder Can Be Fatal’ series now that the groundwork was laid by the initial work. “I think I am more comfortable working on this book after finishing the first two — from a purely practical point of view the physical electronic files for print have been set up already so it’s a case of slotting in the new artwork and lettering. From the point of view of writing and drawing it, it’s been a dream; having two books in the same series has really helped with the structure of it. And coming up with completely different characters and plots for each book has been a lot of fun, as has the challenge of keeping it sophisticated yet kid-friendly!”

Not one to rest on his laurels Nolan has his follow-up book with the famed Irish publisher already lined up for a late summer release. He describes Fintan’s Fifteen as “a humorous story about a struggling U-12s hurling team – no murders or sci-fi elements at all, dagnabbit! I’ll start working on that in a couple of weeks and would hope to have that done and dusted in a couple of months for an August release.”

A return to ‘The Murder Can Be Fatal’ series follows with perhaps the greatest pitch in Irish comics history, “”Brendan Behan in space.” To be titled ‘…And The Blood Flowed Green’ Nolan tells us “There’ll be alien abductions, mysterious worlds, space wars, serial killings, and a crusty Dubliner trying to get home.” This book is slated for an October release.

You can’t talk to Alan without the topic of his popular book Sancho coming up. Alan teased that “I also hope to get a new Sancho comic together – (Sancho co-creator) Ian (Whelan) and I have a killer idea for a full issue story – so we would be back to the floppy US size format, but away from the anthology style that we favoured over the last few issues. It’s just finding the time to do it.” Which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for him, “Mind you, I’ve been doing 80 pages per book on the “Murder” series, 28 pages on a new Sancho shouldn’t kill me.”

Destination: Homicide book description: When Hood City’s long-missing superheroes start to turn up – dead – HCPD’s worst
homicide detectives, Ricky Nixon and Eddie Ribbs, are chosen to head up the case. Together with investigative reporter Abigail Fletcher and their informant, blind bluesman Tonedeaf Roosevelt, Nixon and Ribbs must battle giant albino sewer
alligators, mind-controlled zombie cheerleaders and the mysterious underground kingpin Mister Fogg in a brain-curdling mission to find out – WHO’S KILLING THE SUPERHEROES?

Take a look below at some exclusive blue line and inked art from Destination: Homicide and the cover art to the book.

NEWS: Rob Carey Talks To ICN About Reality Watch For Lightning Strike Anthology

For anyone who has been following the Sketch Paddys art blog or Rob Carey’s own blog these past few months, you may have noticed Rob’s posts relating to an upcoming story called Reality Watch. Viewing the process from pencils to most recently the inked pages, it has been very interesting to see this project come together.

Speaking to ICN this morning Reality Watch artist Rob Carey gave us the break down of the project. “It is going to initially be a 5 page short for the Lightning Strike anthology, with the view of eventually expanding into a graphic novel.” Carey went on to explain the idea stemmed from an idea by his brother Stephen and expressed his delight with his fellow collaborator Peter Mason on the story. “The story and concept was all my brothers work, Stephen Carey, and he wrote the script and will letter the sequential pages. I have been very lucky to have Peter Mason on board for colours, he is currently working on Cancertown 2.”

With a title like Reality Watch, it is fair to say that there is a sci-fi air to the tale as Rob explained the premise of the story to us. “Every so often reality glitches or malfunctions and must be repaired. Reality Watch is a group of people in charge of fixing these glitches which can range from anything like a man who can now fly, to a giant praying mantis becoming president of America. Nate Quinn is the man Reality Watch send in to use his powers and undo these mistakes.”

As Rob explained the traits of the protagonist Nate; “ Nate is one of the few people born different from everyone else. He was born with the potential to bend reality to his will in almost any way possible. However, this ability can only be unlocked by the Reality Watch team if they choose to do so. Although Nate has the ability to manipulate reality, he must always put things back the way they were. In addition, Nate can’t manipulate reality the same way too often or reality becomes confused, so for each mission he must come up with new ways to use his powers. If Nate ever abuses his ability, it will be taken away from him and another candidate will be chosen.”

Rob finishes with a sweetner, ”Imagine Fringe Division has Loki as a field agent, that’s about half way there.” Now that sounds cool!

The launch issue of Lightning Strike is due to hit in the early part of this year this year with some of Ireland’s best indie talent on board. If you want to see more of Lightning Strike just follow the link below likewise to see more of Rob’s work on his blog and at Sketch Paddys.

ICN EXCLUSIVE: John Cullen’s New Webcomic From SFX.co.uk

County Clare artist John Cullen begins a new venture tomorrow when his new webcomic written by SFX’s Rob Power will begin a weekly webcomic on the popular pop culture web site SFX. Cullen, coming off a big achievement where he completed 365 consecutive art blog posts ending last year, has provided ICN with exclusive art sans text from the first strip which you can see below. Be sure to check out www.sfx.co.uk tomorrow to see the first instalment.

Press Release:

Mugged Off: The New Webcomic from SFX.co.uk

Working on SFX–  the galaxy’s greatest sci-fi and fantasy magazine – is obviously a lot of fun, but it’s also hard work, fueled by an awful lot of coffee.

But even the tastiest cup of coffee can be forgotten in a crisis (or a deadline). Mugged Off, sfx.co.uk’s new webcomic, explores the trials and tribulations of Huck, a sentient cup of mouldy coffee, and his life in the offices of SFX.

With superb artwork by rising star of the Irish comics scene John Cullen and written by SFX’s Rob Power, Mugged Offis a journey into the bizarre world of Huck as he deals with deadlines, terrible puns and an overwhelming love of biscuits.

You’ll never look at your tasty hot beverage in the same way again. Probably.

Mugged Off will be posted every Tuesday at  www.sfx.co.uk

PJ HOLDEN: Thoughts on comics in the iPad Age

PJ posted his thoughts on Digital comics on his blog, here’s the first two points check HERE to read the rest

“Ok, some loose thoughts, that may or may not add up to anything and that not only will you disagree with but, over night, I’ll probably find fault with too.

In order to prevent me be a dithering waffler (as I am prone to do) I will state the following as ABSOLUTELY correct assertions and shall brook no compromise. Though, obviously, that’s just an affectation. As I’m probably dead wrong on all fronts.

1) The NEW digital comic format is landscape. Uh hu. It is. We’ve all been fighting it, because, frankly, we’ve too much invested in the old portrait format of print. But we’re all wrong. DC have a couple of books that are pure landscape format (they seem to have started by producing work that can be both landscape ipad and portrait print, by having an artificial half way point on the art, and getting the artist to keep that in mind when drawing. But, I don’t think it’s a strange hybrid animal and if you do it so it works for ipad it works less well for print – and vice versa)

2) Cheap comics weekly or Expensive long one offs. That’s it. That’s your choice. The monthly comic book format, 22 pages for $2.99 is a result of the current distribution model and, while it sort of works ok, produces books that are really perceived as not being great value for money.”

ART: Naomi Bolger’s K-On

Apparently Artists contributor NaomiBomb (Naomi Bolger) has posted her version on K-On to the art blog. K-On, if you don’t know is a Japanese four-panel comic strip manga written and illustrated by Kakifly and a film adaptation was released in Japan last December. The title of the series comes from the Japanese word for light music. Take a look below at the piece.

‘Back to painting and this week I decided to do a piece that had a not too far in the future riot cop with buzz stick. Added a little wall graffiti to make it feel as if it’s during some sort of demonstration which by the looks of the blood, the demonstrators aren’t doing too well in…

All done in Photoshop with a reworking of another abandoned piece. Al in all about 6 hours.’

ANDY LUKE’S NEWSZOOM

What is Newszoom?

http://newszoom.org

NewsZoom takes some of the day’s news stories and converts it into comics form.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, 12:30s.

Hung on the wall at Belfast’s Arts and Disability Forum. Transmitted out over the interwebs. A physical copy, in your hand. In ten minutes; unless you’ve subscribed in advance to pick up.

Like every other paper, NewsZoom has an agenda. I just don’t know what it is yet, because I’m flying by the seat of my pants. Perhaps a right to the left. Feel free to email suggestions.

NewsZoom comes from a number of places – my desire to harness the work ethic of the 24 hour comics formula, while mitigating the damage. It comes from a fascination with those who work in the newspaper industry – nourished by the comics section in The Sunday Post, work experience at the Bangor Spectator, and the children’s TV show, Press Gang, written by the young Stephen Moffat. It’s also from the idea that comics can do anything, transmit any communication – from bank statements to badminton lessons. Really.

- Andrew Luke
A Quarter To Midnight

As part of Belfast’s Arts and Disability Forum exhibition, In Time, I’ll be creating a new comic. Tuesdays, Thursdays, around about 12:30s – from 2nd February to 15th March, 2012. THE NEWS. In comics form.

ANTHONY SAYS:

“This is a version of the pic of Peggy carter that Steve rogers (aka captain America) kept on him when he went into battle.
i always loved the beautiful tragedy between these two characters. I tried to create a bit of discoloration and wear on the photo as if the years in the ice had effected it.
The beautifully calligraphic writing in the top right hand corner was done by my girlfriend Charlene just to give it that feminine touch iv also thrown in caps helmet and a bullet belt just for fun.”

WEBCOMIC: Alien age 11

Alien age 11

John White, the man who brought you Star Wars age 9, in which he reconstructed the whole of Star Wars as a webcomic out of his childhood drawings, is at it again. This time, it’s Alien age 11. A slightly older John takes on a more adult science fiction film, Ridley Scott’s Alien.
