As the dust begins to settle after a hectic couple of weeks of voting, counting and announcing, reactions to the awards from the winners have been coming in. Below, are some of the winners of the 2011 ICN Awards in their own words.
Jeff Parker (Marvel Comics writer of Thunderbolts):
Thank you very much for this recognition, we’ll do our best to keep the stories at this level! You know on Declan’s issues we call the book T’underbolts, right? Speaking of The Brilliant One: You can expect Declan to cut a wide swath in the field of comics as his career keeps rising. He’s one of the most inventive and resourceful artists to emerge in the past decade, and a born storyteller. I certainly hope to work with him as much as I can!
Declan Shalvey (Marvel Comics artist of Thunderbolts):
Very happy THUNDERBOLTS won best mainstream comic by an Irish creator. Really glad to hear that people at home are supporting and enjoying the book that Jeff, Kev Frank, Joe and I are working on. Also, I’m sure writer Jeff Parker will be happy to know that out of all his books, Thunderbolts is the best Irish one
Mike Lynch (Winner of Best Self Published Writer)
Just want to say a huge thank you to Irish Comic News, to everyone that nominated and voted for me. I would also like to thank a few other people too. I want to thank first off Aidan Courtney for letting me write for Coimici Gael. Martin Greene for letting me work on his stories and trusting me enough not to mess them up. To the team of artists we have now working on Nestor and Wire and Gas. Also congratulations to every one that was nominated too. It’s a very cool time to be involved in comics inIreland. The wealth of talented people here is excellent.
Doc Huysmans (of Dublin City Comics)
Thanks to everyone who voted for us in the ICN awards. We were in with some well established stores and were content just to be nominated. Since opening just over a year ago, we have had nothing but great support from our customers and friends and its only because of you guys that we get to work at what we love doing. Its a shop for fans, run by fans and also a great little community, so here’s to many more years of fun
Alan Nolan (Winner of Best Self Published Artist)
I’m really chuffed to win this, especially against such tough opposition. It’s been a great but busy year for me with the three O’Brien Press releases, but the Self Published Artist award is certainly spurring me on to get another SANCHO comic out next year! Iano, grab yer pencil, we’ve got some writin’ to do!
Paddy Brown (Cattle Raid of Cooley Creator)
I’m chuffed to bits that people enjoy what I do. It’s been a difficult year for me in a lot of ways, but my work has kept me going and knowing it’s appreciated means a lot. There’s a long way to go before the story’s finished, and I hope you’ll stick with me. Thanks to everybody who voted, and commiserations to the other nominees.
Bob Byrne (Winner of the first Hall of Fame -Comic section)
